LED lighting use 'will increase'

08 May 2010

A new research document has suggested that a growing number of construction projects will start to use LED (light-emitting diodes) lighting.

Conducted by Pike Research, the study, entitled Energy Efficient Lighting for Commercial Markets, suggests that LED lighting will become more popular as people increasingly look to cut costs by improving energy efficiency.

The study found that around 17.5 per cent of global electricity consumption is already accounted for by lighting.

However, the research predicted that by 2020 around 46 per cent of all illumination in the commercial, industrial and outdoor stationary sectors will be supplied by the rapidly expanding LED market, which could reduce energy consumption.

According to CNET, Los Angeles in the US has already begun to replace much of its municipal lighting installations with LEDs, contributing to a 40 per cent reduction in its annual energy consumption for public lighting.

While LEDs are initially more expensive to purchase, they use a fraction of the energy of traditional light sources and will last for longer.
